The young explorers from the Foundation Phase at Nyiko Primary School embarked on a magnificent two-day adventure into the heart of Mpumalanga, from Monday, 15 September, to Tuesday, 16 September 2025. This educational tour was a deep dive into the natural wonders and wildlife of our beautiful country, creating lasting memories for all involved.

The learners were treated to a truly unique overnight stay at the Moholoholo Junior Wildlife camp, where the sounds of the African bush provided the soundtrack to their unforgettable experience. The trip was expertly managed under the careful guidance of teachers, Ma’am Makhuvele E. and Ma’am Hlungwani J.R., alongside the supportive presence of SGB members, Mr. Mathebula K.E. and Miss Machete R.E.

A Day of Breathtaking Natural Wonders

The first day was dedicated to exploring the world-famous Panorama Route. The learners' sense of wonder was ignited as they discovered the ancient Eco Caves, a series of interconnected sandstone chambers that felt like a natural playground. The journey continued to the iconic Three Rondavels, where the magnificent view of these mountain peaks resembling traditional huts offered a perfect lesson in geography and cultural symbolism.

The group then witnessed the incredible power of nature at the Bourke's Luck Potholes, where the swirling water has sculpted fascinating cylindrical formations into the rock over centuries. The day's exploration culminated at God’s Window, where the learners climbed to the viewpoint and were rewarded with a breathtaking panorama of the Lowveld, literally looking out over the world from above the clouds.

Wildlife Encounters and Fun in the Sun

After a restful night in the bush and a hearty breakfast, day two was all about wildlife and relaxation. The scholars enjoyed an up-close and personal experience at the Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre. Here, they learned invaluable lessons about conservation, the importance of protecting endangered species, and the delicate balance of our ecosystems—a core part of their foundation phase curriculum brought to life.

After the educational tour, the children were able to cool off and have some fun with a refreshing swim in the pool at their accommodation. The successful trip concluded with a stop in the town of Hoedspruit, where the learners had a chance to do some shopping for souvenirs before beginning the journey home.

The teachers and SGB members reported that the learners were enthusiastic, well-behaved, and full of curiosity throughout the entire excursion. The trip was not only a tremendous success but also a vital immersive experience that complemented their classroom learning, fostering a love for nature and a deeper understanding of South Africa's incredible natural heritage.

Nyiko Primary School extends its heartfelt thanks to the parents for their trust and support and to the dedicated team of educators and governors who ensured the trip was both safe and profoundly educational.
